The Perplexed Resident and Communication
No one would argue that attempting to communicate with your residents who are suffering the ill effects of a disorder like dementia can be challenging at best. Clearly, it can be difficult for both the caregiver and the resident. It is no secret that a large part of being a caregiver involves working with perplexed or confused residents. Having said this, there are a number of good tips and lots of professional advice out there that caregivers, assisted living managers and care home owners can benefit from.
This said, what you often see and deal with as a caregiver in the assisted living environment are those individuals struggling with the effects of dementia and/or Alzheimer’s disease. As such, there are a few things to remember when you are working with these residents. First, try to be a good listener. One way to be a more effective listener is to position yourself directly in front of the resident, not to the side as many caregivers do. Second, try speaking more slowly and as clear as possible.
Third, ensure that when you are speaking to residents that you tell them who you are. Forth, ask yes/no questions, and try to use shorter sentences. Lastly, try to remove distractions that could hinder your ability to communicate effectively with your residents. Although it is sometimes frustrating communicating with your residents simply having a few tips in your “caregiver toolbox” can go a long way in fostering more effective and efficient communication between you and your residents. In the same vein, more effective communication means that you are going to make your residents feel more at ease and comfortable in the care home, as well as with the caregivers.
