Gallaudet University Launching a New Self-Paced Training Course, Offered in ASL and English

Gallaudet University (GU) we will be launching a new self-paced training course, offered in ASL and English, to prepare Deaf individuals to provide caregiving services and individuals providing caregiving services to Deaf seniors. Gallaudet University is working in collaboration with the American Caregiver Association to provide caregiver training for the hearing impaired.

An online, self-paced caregiver training in ASL to prepare students for the American Caregiver Association exam will be offered Summer 2022 through Gallaudet University’s Center for Continuing and Online Education (CCOE). Upon completion of the course and the exam, students will receive their caregiver certificate from the American Caregiver Association.

The National Caregiver Certification Course (NCCC) from Gallaudet University, in collaboration with the American Caregiver Association, is intended to provide relevant and useful information about the most common responsibilities and duties of caregiving. This course is designed specifically for Deaf caregivers and those providing caregiving services to Deaf senior citizens. A sample of topics covered include:

  • Patient’s Rights
  • The Aging Process
  • Preventing Abuse
  • Neglect and Exploitation
  • Controlling the Spread of Disease and Infection
  • Hygiene;
  • Documentation and Service Plans;
  • Nutrition
  • Medications
  • Social, Recreational and Rehabilitative Activities
  • Dementia & Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Managing Difficult Behavior

The information presented will be both in written English and ASL.

The learning goals are

  1. To ensure that deaf and signing students understand the fundamental responsibilities of being a caregiver by preparing them for the National Caregiver Certification Course (NCCC) Exam.
  2. To provide deaf and signing students with the basic tools and information they need to be a successful caregiver.
  3. To provide Deaf-centric guidance and insight into the caregiver industry and the demands of being a deaf, signing caregiver.
  4. To ensure that students understand the core principles and values of the American Caregiver Association (ACA) in both written English and ASL.

The American Caregiver Association is both honored and proud to be a special part of this new venture with Gallaudet University. We look forward to big things to come. More importantly, we look forward to having more certified caregivers in our communities that have the skills and abilities to provide high quality care for our seniors.
