What do i need to do to become a caregiver

This is a question that we get everyday. First off, before you ever start you start thinking about what you need to do to become a caregiver you should first consider what ‘type’ of caregiving that you want to do. Do you want to work for a home health company? Would you like to work as a live-in caregiver? Or, are you more interested in doing your own thing; perhaps providing independent caregiver services, or starting your own caregiver service business? Do you prefer to work on your own or be supervised?

As you can see, there are a number of different directions that you can take as far as the settings in which you might want to work as a caregiver. In the early stages of your decision-making process you might find yourself floating back and forth between doing your own thing and working for someone else.  Take your time and write down your goals for yourself. Don’t be in a hurry, but be decisive and be committed to whatever decision that you end up making at the end of the day.

Once you have answered the above questions, then you can begin to construct a plan for getting your caregiver certification based on the venue in which you would like to work, combined with the goals that you have set for yourself. The certification end of things is actually the easier part of the plan. In fact, acquiring caregiver certification with the American Caregiver Association can take as little as 2-3 days. The nice thing about obtaining caregiver certification with the ACA is the fact that once finished, you are entered into the National Caregiver Registry, or NCR.

The NCR is the Official registry for caregivers in the United States, and the NCR is the registry that interested parties will check when they are wanting to verify your caregiver credentials. This is where the ACA comes in. When prospective employers contact us, we are here for you to confirm, on your behalf, that you have completed a course with us, are certified, and are in good standing. This is crucial for you, the caregiver, because those checking into your NCR status will have peace of mind, (as will you) knowing that you have done what you said you have done. In turn, you garner instant credibility as an individual, and as a caregiver.
